All You Need to Know About Duct Cleaning

Presented by Enercare

Why you should clean your ducts

There are many reasons why you should get your ducts cleaned, the first one is your health. Dirty ducts can create interruptions of airflow and increase the percentage of airborne contaminants, often leading to health problems like allergies, asthma, headaches, sneezing and respiratory infections. Did you know that indoor air pollution is often worse than the pollution outside your home? Why? Because dust, debris and even mould can accumulate in your ducts before it is recirculated in your household air. In addition to health benefits, cleaning your ducts will make your heating system work more efficiently and your equipment last longer, and you should have less dusting to do.

When to clean your ducts

You should clean your ducts regularly, especially when you have a busy household with pets and children, when moving to a new home or after doing home renovations. If you notice that there is a partial or full blockage of the airflow you should also have it cleaned. Fall is an excellent time to clean your ducts, as it is just before you are going to spend most of your time indoors without opening windows and you want to make sure your air is not full of airborne contaminants.

Signs that it could be time to clean your ducts

You should check if:

  • dust and debris have accumulated under the vent cover, especially if you have long haired pets, like cats and dogs;
  • there is a thick dirt buildup in the air registers; or
  • the air filter is clogged and you need to replace it (tip: you should check your filter every three months, more often if you have pets and members of your family that suffer from allergies.)

If you answered yes to any of these, it might be time to clean your ducts.

Who should clean your ducts?

You can do it yourself, but no matter how hard you try, it will never be as efficient as when an HVAC specialist does it for you. Why? Because even if you are using a shop-vac or a powerful vacuum cleaner, you will never be able to move 25 000 cu. ft. of air per minute to clear out all the dust and debris accumulated and stuck in your ducts, like Enercare’s state-of-the-art truck mounted technology does. In addition to duct cleaning, an HVAC specialist can clean vent covers, air registers, clean or replace the air filter, check the fan and the AC coils and do a furnace inspection, so you don’t have to worry about it.
